Rochlitzer Porphyry

Rochlitzer Porphyry

Rochlitzer Porphyry is a tuff situated on Rochlitzer Berg that had been an active volcano a long time ago. It has left an 80 metres thick layer formed out of grown cold lava – the Rochlitzer Porphyry.

Its siliceous clayey matrix exists of small grains and is porous. Furthermore it contains numerous roundish quartz crystals. Few and far between there are disseminations of deep magnesia, bluish lipilli and balls out of porphyry which invest Rochlitzer Porphyry with a unique colour and texture.

In addition to that the mostly brick-red to yellow strips are characteristic. They are nerved with brownish to white ledges that are filled with cert on the one hand side and quartz on the other hand side. Its luminous red shade is commanding as well as fast and remains through every machining phase. Also after many years it characteristic colour does not change.
